A roofing project requires a lot of planning. From the materials you will use to the contractor that you will hire, you’ve probably taken a lot of factors into account. But have you given any thought to the amount of waste that will be generated during the project? If your contractor does not rent a dumpster for the project, you could be left with a mess.

In order to figure out the right dumpster size, you will first need to determine the type of shingles you have on your roof. Some materials are heavier than others, and different dumpster sizes have different weight limits. So, while you could use a smaller dumpster for your project, you may have to rent a larger one if the weight of the material exceeds the capabilities of a particular dumpster size.

Many Fox Point homeowners have three-tab shingles on their roof, which are the most common shingles in use. However, if you have an older home, then you may have a different type of shingle. In this situation, it’s best to consult with your roofing contractor and take their weight estimation into account before deciding on a dumpster rental.

Calculating the requirements for asphalt shingles

You might hear your contractor talk about “squares” in terms of surface area. However, 1 square is not 1 square foot. The term refers to 100 square feet instead, which is the area that can be covered by three bundles of shingles. One bundle will weigh around 60 to 80 pounds, so for 100 square feet, you will have a weight of around 180 to 240 pounds. That means that for a 2,000 square foot roof, or 20 squares, you will have somewhere between 3,600 and 4,800 pounds of asphalt shingles that you’ll need to dispose of.

How other materials come into play

When talking about other shingle materials, there are some weights to take into consideration:

  • Concrete – 8-10 lbs
  • Aluminum – 0.5 lbs
  • Fiberglass – 4.5 lbs
  • Clay – 12-20 lbs
  • Slate – 10 lbs
  • Wood – 4.5 lbs
  • Copper – 0.85 lbs

However, during the roofing project, you will have to deal with other materials besides the shingles. Two of these materials are the underlayment and the nails that keep it in place. Underlayment is also known as felt paper, and it is heavy enough to add extra weight to the overall load needed for the dumpster.

Felt paper is generally broken into three categories: 15 lb paper, which weighs about 0.2 lbs/sq ft, 30 lb paper, at 0.3 lbs/sq ft, and 45 lb paper, at 0.5 lbs/sq ft. So, for a 2,000 sq ft roof, you will have anywhere from 400 to 1000 lbs of underlayment.

The Fox Point dumpster rental unit size

The smallest dumpster size available generally comes at 6 cubic yards, which has a capacity to carry 3,000 lbs of weight. This dumpster size would only be suited for smaller roofing projects. For your typical project, you will need a unit that ranges from 10 to 15 cubic yards. The weight range here would be somewhere between 4,000 and 5,000 pounds. For larger projects, or if you have two layers of shingles on your roof, you will likely need a unit in the 20 cubic yard range, which has a capacity of 7,000 pounds. Lastly, you can also rent out 30 cubic yard units, which can hold around 10,000 lbs of debris.
